This article is all about the delicate balance between accepting what’s offered and asking for what you want. Salary is such an important factor when considering a new position. We all have our minimum expectations for a salary package, as it needs to suit our established lifestyle.
When you’ve been offered a new position, you need to consider the offer that has been made. What we have found in our experience with candidates and clients is that it can be a delicate balancing act. You don’t want to ask for too much and inflate yourself. At the same time, you don’t want to ask for too little and devalue yourself and your skills.
If you feel like the position is perfect and everything aligns, but the salary is $5k too low, it can be worthwhile to consider asking for that extra $5k. We’ve seen examples of candidates declining job offers simply due to the offer, and the client has said afterwards that they would have agreed to the extra $5k.
So, if you feel you are the most suitable candidate, you enjoy the dealership culture and the dynamic between yourself and the interviewer is great – don’t let money get in the way. Essentially, don’t be afraid to ask for what you want, if it’s the job you really want. If they can’t budge and neither can you, that’s okay. Perhaps it wasn’t meant to be.
